unlike in IE the XSLT transform is passed straight as a dom to teh
rendering engine it isn't reparsed so there isn't really a document that
you can sensibly write into.

I suppose it could be made to work but the natural way must be that
writing strings doesn't work and you should manipulate the dom using DOM
calls to access/update nodes in the tree.
