Yes, it depends on the rules for the API used to set the parameter.

In XSLT 2.0 you can declare it as:

<xsl:param name="pos" select="0" as="xs:integer"/>

and be sure to get the right type. In XSLT 1.0 it's safest to do

<xsl:param name="pos" select="0"/>
<xsl:variable name="npos" select="number($pos)"/>
