If you set the delimiters to:

    "'.:;,&#xA;'"

then the result is:

<word>good morning</word>
<word> can you help me</word>
<word> alpha </word>
<word> alpha beta</word>
<word/>

If you want, you may additionally normalize-space() in a second pass.
