An xml declaration has to be the first byte of the file or it is a syntax error, but when you do "saxon:parse(field you get the string value of the field element which contains some white space before the xml delcaration. It's a dangerous thing to have there anyway as whatever encoding is specified there, the actual data will be in the encoding of the surrounding document, so ignoring it is probably better than making it be read without error, just zap it with a regexp-replace "saxon:parse(replace(field[@name='body'],'^<\?xml[^>]*>','')) David ________________________________________________________________________ This e-mail has been scanned for all viruses by Star.
