You have
xsl:number result: (<xsl:number level="multiple" count="a" from="a"/>)
XSLT 1 says:
if the from attribute is specified, then the only ancestors that are searched are those that are descendants of the nearest ancestor that matches the from pattern.
so the only things that are counted are a elements that are descendants
of the nearest a element, and (necessarily) ther are no such elements,
so you get nothing counted.
