Since you say it's an element declared as IDREFS rather than an anYes, I did mean that, simpleType, or simpleContent.
element you must be talking about schema typing and xs:IDREFS.
If you are using a non-schema aware xslt engine (such as the free saxon)ok, so as just one text node, I take that to be...
then the schema will not be read so the IDREFS declaratin is not seen
and the element content is treated as untyped, just as any other content
