For example, some XML applications use them in attribute *values*: <xsl:function name="ns:fun"> ... </xsl:function> So the XSLT processor uses all namespaces in the result tree, until you specify @exclude-result-prefixes *and* they are not used (for naming element or attribute). The processor prevents you to produce ill-formed XML. Why don't you want the namespace declarations?
