If you are using a schema aware xslt engine and th eelement containing the text gas bee schema-validated against a list type then the typed value of the element will be a sequence of values based on tokenizing on the white space. But since I think your element was <title> it seems most unlikely that that has a schema type which is a list. Which parser and xslt engine are you using?
