Indeed, it is easier to understand and hopefully more efficient.

I changed my stylesheet to:

	<xsl:for-each-group select="item" group-by="@racknum">
		<p>Group racknum: <xsl:value-of
select="current-grouping-key()"/> Group max: <xsl:value-of
select="max(current-group()/@pocketnum)"/>
		</p>
	</xsl:for-each-group>

And now I get results:

	<p>Group racknum: 1 Group max: 13</p>
	<p>Group racknum: 2 Group max: 6</p>

Thank you!

Others have pointed to teh immediate cause of teh error message, but if
you find yourself doing this:

> <xsl:for-each select="distinct-values(//item/@racknum)">
>         <xsl:variable name="rack-num" select="."/>
>         <xsl:variable name="pocket-num" select="//item[./@racknum =
> $rack-num and position() = last()]"/>

9 times out of 10 its easier (and probably more efficient) to do

<xsl:for-each-group select="//item" group-by="@racknum">

(also probably //item should just be item)
