Incidentally, why do you want to use document('')?? It's used quite a lot in XSLT 1 but in all cases where I have seen it used it is to get round the restriction that variables containing literal XML generate result tree fragments rather than node sets. As that restriction is thankfully gone in XSLt2 I would expect the document ('') construction to be rather rare. David
