  I'm not sure what you want here, because the result of concat() is an
xs:string, so using string-join() is not relevant here.  Did you mean
the following instead?

    string-join(
        for $a in $ana return
          concat($a, ':', key('cat-by-id', $a)/catDesc),
        ', '
      )
