The NodeTest node() matches any node, but the expression node() is short for
child::node() which only selects nodes that are children of something.

You can select nodes of any type, but you need to say which axis you want to
use to find them. Attribute nodes are found only on the attribute axis, and
there is no way of searching the attribute axis at the same time as another
axis, except by using a "union" operator as you have done.
