I'm not sure if I understand what output you expected, but there is
nothing special about templates with no mode, "no mode" otherwise known
as "default mode" is essentially just a mode with no name, but in other
respects works the same way as a mode with a name.  So if you go
<xsl:template match="*">... that applies only to the no-mode case in
exactly the same way as <xsl:template match="*" mode="m"> applies to the
mode=m case.
