When I finally uninstalled Java completely, because the update to JRE 1.6 seems to have not deleted 1.5, and installed 1.6 anew the XSLT problem disappeared. I was not aware of such a dependence.
recently I installed the new JRE 1.6 Java Sun Java Runtime Environment version 1.6
