Harsh,

Yes, your problem was a fun variant in that it's a grouping problem, only it seems not to be, since the grouping of the output appears only by virtue of that attribute value, without any wrapper element.

Which just goes to show that given the tools, some problems turn out not to be as hard as we thought they were, once we've stepped into the weeds.
