There are very good reasons why organizations choose to exchange data in XML, but all the benefits disappear if you start exchanging data in a format which is a-bit-like-XML-but-not-quite. If one party is sending invalid XML (or conversely, if one party is sending valid XML and the other party is rejecting it), then you should ALWAYS fix the component that is wrong, rather than introducing a compensatory bug at the other end of the line.
