That was an attempt in that direction, but personally I think there were too many places where that would produce non well formed input (so no output) to be really reliable. zapping & with sed isn't 100% reliable either but it will never make a well formed document not well formed, and (being only 1 line of code) it's rather easier to tweak when things do go wrong.
