yes, but that's the answer to the followup question (not yet asked) not
the original question.

Q1, I have an RTF corresponding to a node tree and want a string, can I
do that without extensions?

A1. No.

Q2. What can I do then?

A2. Don't generate an RTF containing the node set, generate one with a
text node with the serialised form,

or, depending on the actual use case.

A2'. don't generate an Xpath string from the RTF, just copy the nodes
directly to the result tree.
