Then only include non-empty elements in the sequence ... the 
predicate used in the following will reject an element that has only 
white-space characters in it:

<xsl:sort select="( monogr/author[normalize-space(.)],
                    analytic/author[normalize-space(.)],
                    monogr/editor[normalize-space(.)],
                    monogr/title[normalize-space(.)] )[1]"/>
