OK, thank you.
I found the problem. When passing the param of $str, I did not put
single quotes around the value
so when calling a template like this:
<xsl:with-param name="str" select="recent_images"/>
it did not work,
 but it works with extra quotes around the value:
<xsl:with-param name="str" select="'recent_images'"/>
