no, unless your system optimises that away it is a lot more efficient to
write

test="normalize-space(<expression>)"

finding the string length of a mixed length byte encoding such as utf-16
or utf-8 is potentially expensive and you don't need the length just know
if it is non empty.

But this expression was in the original question, so the real question
is why the OP found it didn't work. perhaps there is more than 1 aaa
element child of the current node, in which case you'd need

test="normalize-space(aaa[1])"

or something...
