so sadly off topic for this list (being python and perl:-)

although back on topic, the xmlspec markup used for many xml related w3c
specs (including xpath) does hve some support for marking up changes at the xml source
level which are carried through the xsl stylesheets, they were used for
mathml2 diffs for example this one:

the xsl stylesheets and sources used for that are linked as the xml zip
archive from that page.
