Well if you're using XSLT 2.0, then this:

Can be this:


<xsl:for-each-group select="//document-type" group-by="@sp_document_type">
  <xsl:variable name="doctype" select="current-grouping-key()"/>

While you may not be processing the entire group, there's no rule that says you have to.

Alternatively, you might consider this:

<xsl:for-each select="distinct-values(//document-type/@sp-document-type">
  <xsl:variable name="doctype" select="."/>
  ...

The bottom line is that XSLT 2.0 offers several (many) features that allow you to simplify processing --
