That depends what you mean by letter (unicode has a lot of letters) and whether you want xslt 1 or 2 (xslt 2 has a lot more string handling capability)


in xpath 2 matches(.,^[a-z]','i') might be your friend or replace [a-z] by some bigger class such as \p{L} (all letters)
