Are the brackets necessary Martin?

I am not entiry sure they are needed, maybe someone else can tell us, or maybe later on I will find time to make sense of the combined schema and XPath/XSLT regular expression syntax (which introduced the '^' and '$' on top of the schema regular expression syntax).
