   Question. Same way as 2.0 using 1.0 stylesheet, does it just warn me and work?

Saxon 9.8 HE does tell you with version="1.0" stylesheets that it does not run them, you need at least version="2.0" in which case it emits a warning.
PE and EE 9.8 I think continue to run version="1.0" code with the usual warning.
