"Desperate Perl hacker".

An imaginary figure frequently invoked during the initial design of XML,
someone who has to get something done with their data (often data they
know quite well) by hook or crook, and who is working with capable but
not necessarily XML-aware tools.

The DPH was one intended beneficiary of the stated goal that "It shall
be easy to write programs which process XML documents."

I have the impression (based on no hard evidence) that many of the
people who used Perl and similar tools to get things done with their
SGML data now use XSLT for all the things they used to do with Perl. So
now it's only unusual problems like yours which rouse the DPH sleeping
inside of people like David Carlisle. (Like King Arthur, waiting to be
awakened in an hour of dire need.)
