I liked the original Amidar like concept, where you had to fill the screen with dots and avoid the enemies. That would have involved a bit more tactics than a 'mindless shooter'. With a bit of finetuning and some new game elements that might have become a nice game. Shooting doesn't really fit in there. You need to think of a new concept. Maybe turn it into a flat version of Tempest and use the dotted background for the spike aliens. Or a combination of shooting and collecting, as Greg has suggested.
