Yes, flying down the cave will be much easier, but you
will have to return to the surface with a heavy ball
(the so called "klystron pod") connected to your ship,
and that is not easy... (look at the original
C64-version or one pc-clone at:
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~peda/thrust/)

The terrain data is already very good compressed (i
think). The original game has _only_ six levels, which
should be included. Then there will be some space
left, i hope, which could be used for some very tricky
extra levels, but there is still a long way until
then...
