It all about friction, baby!  Yes, the plastic ages, as does the adhesive
and the ferrous (ferric?) oxide itself.  But a very large component of
degradation is simply the rubbing of the tape against the various styles,
captans, heads, etc, all at high speed and tension.  If these are archival,
they wouldn't ahve been subjected to this....
