Which means... er... maybe the AC adapter can't quite cope with the high
power consumtion of that thingie?
Or the LED doesn't have its normal function anymore.

Anyway, the battery life remark is somewhat misleading, since there are
different types of batteries, rechargeable and non-rechargeable ones, with
different capacities and therefore also different lifetimes in that
apparatus. With what type of batteries did you determine that life span?
Maybe you should try to determine how much current it draws (you do have a
multimeter laying around on one of those pictures, don't you?). From that we
could try to calculate battery life for different types of rechargeable and
one-way batteries.
