The 52 colors on the NES was due to mirroring, though, wasn't it?
ISTR the palette was 4*16 but palette entry 0 was mirrored at three
other positions in each set of 16 colors, something like that?
It's been a little while since I played with the NES.

What about resolutions? Atari systems always use an even multiple or fraction of NTSC color clock (40/80/160/320, etc...). The same goes for the Amiga's NTSC modes.


Japanese systems often use different resolutions like 256 horizontal. Is that just so they can fit the X coordinate in one byte? The video encoder must have to be more complicated to use a resolution like that.
