    mind for the score display?

Maybe Stunt Cycle? Just to put a gradient on it. It doesn't have to be single-line accuracy. Just to go from the yellow you have to a more brick red or orange, but not so drastic that it would make the score hard to read. You could do a playfield canyon in the background but that might be overkill since the perspective of the game isn't really 3D to begin with, it could be disorienting. Something more abstract just to break up the screen into the play and score zones I think would be appropriate.

Another idea would be to frame it so that the score looks like a sign over a corall (Gunfight at the OK Corall kinda thing).
