How thick are they going to be on the actual boxes? You should go with
venirs, which are used in marquetry, which is the art of wooden inlays. You
slice the venir up with a razor and attach it to the box with glue. Then
you apply a laquer on top to seal it. Even if the venir was sold in thin
strips you could create large shapes by stacking them. This would have the
added benefit of looking like scanlines ;)
I don't think the venir is tremendously expensive, but it sure looks good on
the finished product.
I wanted to make a replacement 2600 case like this (so people could worship
real woodgrain) but I haven't got the woodworking skills.
