Subject: [stella] How did Activision black out the "comb" effect?

Activision blacks out the "comb" effect when they reposition sprites.
How do they do that? Do they time the write of the background color to
show black on the left and then once they're pass the "black comb" start
outputting the scanline's background color? Can someone point me to an
example?

I'm experimenting with Piero Cavina's PCMSD source and was curious.
