Yeah, but their colors are then chained to the player. I'm thinking about a chronocolor effect now. If the screen is composed of two alternating playfields, You could enforce three tile types:

Black+Black = Black
White+White = White
White+Black = Gray

Not sure of what flicker "quality" the resulting gray would be though. And also, this third state would not allow the same gameplay functionality as the scaled third color in the original Archon. Still worth a thought...

BTW: About the action scene: Basically it's a simplified Death Derby kernel, or? :-)  
(Ignoring the Phoenix and the Witches for the moment...)
