I had just the same experience with the open e-book DTD.
pcdata within a container.

Drawing pretty pictures of children and siblings
made me understand it.
With *here* as body
  child p   this is ok
  child hr
  child text() this is
  child b bad
  child text() naked...

etc. 

Viewed this way its far clearer to see which are siblings
of the current node.

Yet another design pattern??
