Yeh I don't know xalan too well but codes <= x1F are rather illegal in xml. I don't know if you can get a x0C into the output stream somehow by constructing one into a variable or something. Maybe putting a single x0C character into a comment at the beginning of your xml would allow you to get at it somehow then use it on output. I'm clutching at straws here.
