Yes they are. Are you using XalanJ 1.2, it has this exact bug. A fix will be out shortly, but for now a bypass is to order your variable in the oposite order. This is a bug that appeared in this version of xalan due to reversing the order of global variable evaluation, the fact that human xsl writer tend to define the variables in the order they use it hid a deeper bug which is that the ordering of global variable should not have any effect. I believe that they compeletely rethought the way global variables are evaluated.
