The > xsl for the pull down list is: You sound as if you're trying to do all this within one XSLT transformation: you seem confused between JavaScript that is executing as part of the transformation, to generate HTML output, and script that is executing within the dynamic HTML of the page you are generating, which might initiate another separate transformation.
