I would think you would have to limit your text selection to a well formed or mixed content XML fragment and then surround it with the choosen open and closing tags. If you want the editor to be DTD or schema aware you have a much bigger job on your hands. I would check out how other XML editors work before even attempting such a project. Good luck.
