I think the objections you would encounter would be: (a) will users understand it? (b) can it be statically type-checked and optimized? (c) if explicit syntax is good enough for SQL, why isn't it good enough for XQuery? Why not put together a position paper arguing the case for higher-order functions in XPath/XQuery: I'll be happy to bring it to the group's attention.
