No, the attribute is written as "<" in the source file but as soon as it is parsed (i.e., as soon as it is recognized as an attribute) it has the value "<". Parsers do not do transformation, I think you are confusing the XML parser with the XSLT processor. Understanding the distinction is absolutely crucial here.
