I suspect you need to turn the result tree fragment from your first pass into a node set in pure xslt this isn't possoible but most systems have a node-set extension function in their extension namespace to do this. Certainly IE (MSXML3) does, as does saxon, xalan, xt. Not sure about libxslt.
