The expression <xsl:apply-templates select="descendant::*@key='unique.key']"/>
Is the current way things are working.
I assume you meant
<xsl:apply-templates select="descendant::*[@key='unique.key']"/> ^
If you have one global key definition of <xsl:key name="x" match="*" use="@key"/>
the you'd just need to go
<xsl:apply-templates select="key('x','unique.key')"/>
which is simpler and likely to be faster.
