In some cases it almost certainly will, like if you have two large
tables and you are trying to do a join.

In other cases it certainly won't, like if you have deeply hierarchic
mixed content and you are trying to render it as HTML.

I suspect your friend is so locked into the two-dimensional mindset of
SQL (it's surprising how often one sees XML documents that stick rigidly
to these constraints) that s/he has simply failed to see that a lot of
real world information is very difficult to represent in tabular form.
