> I tried to put that in <xsl:text>, but that doesen't work. well if you want to generate a doctype declaration and a book element node why would you expect <xsl:text to work? > Choosing "xml" as output-method is also no solution. xml is teh default so just specifying that would make no difference, specify doctype-system="/usr/share/sgml/docbook_4/docbook.dtd" in xsl:output to get the doctype, and to generate the book element just use that element in teh stylesheet. <book id="How-to" lang="de"> ... </book> in your template will generate that element in the result.
