Yes, from an item do a test on the count of the parent's preceding-sibling randlist elements when doing the label: <xsl:choose> <xsl:when test="count(../preceding-sibling::randlist) mod 2 = 1"> ...do a bullet... <xsl:otherwise> ...do an en-dash...
