You can't modify the value of a variable once its created, and you probably don't really want to do that. Do a search of this list and you will find many explanations of why.

If you post a small example of the xml/xsl and result then someone can probably help you find a proper xsl solution.

Also, when creating a variable use:
<xsl:variable name="a" select="1"/>

Unless you really want the value of your variable to be a result tree fragment, as opposed to just being a number...
