So that would select nothing and you'd need <xsl:value-of select="$CategoryPointer/news/HeadlineColor"/> But if the variable is bound to the news element then you'd need <xsl:value-of select="$CategoryPointer/HeadlineColor"/> Also this is assuming that your default namespace is no-namespace, otherwise you will have to adjust your XPaths to select HeadlineColor in that namespace.
